Discovery Hub
Discovery Hub is a functional, yet simple and beautiful communal structure, with a small physical footprint and net zero carbon emissions designed. It is powered by a network of kiosks, that I originally designed for a political support group of a major candidate in Nigeria’s 2023 Presidential elections. The kiosks will be repurposed after the elections, through a partnership program with Initiative for Community Welfare & Care (ICWC), a Nigerian non-profit.
We have developed a prototype which will soon go into field testing, but I am already working on follow-up design options that allow the hub to expand into a larger space, accommodate minimalist and foldable furniture, for wider impact.
Discovery Hub will help children and adults explore different skills and fields, learn new topics and find their niche. It’s a space that allows people to explore their interests. One could learn about programming, animation, art, journalism, nursing, architecture, farming, engineering, carpentry, baking, and so much more at an introductory level.
Design and Functionality
Discovery Hub is a solar powered collapsible structure equipped with internet access . It has 6 collapsible pieces for easy transportation and assembly, made with metal for security reasons that will also be used for advertisements to help small growing businesses in the community. The Discovery Hub allows access to a portal with abundant resources on introductory courses in various fields. In addition to the introductory courses one will also have access to professionals in a person’s area of interest who are willing to volunteer their time in providing guidance in steps to take in order to pursue that career path.
The discovery board will have pamphlets on the different learning and voluntary opportunities available. In such communities awareness about HIV, cancer screening and domestic abuse is limited and we intend to educate people on those issues using the help from the numerous volunteers working with ICWC Nigeria. In most countries a high percentage of its' citizens have access to internet service so such a hub could function strictly online without a need for a physical structure. Unfortunately that is not the case in Nigeria.
Role
Design and prototype building for the political party and coming up with a resourceful way to continue it's use after the elections.
